Bush Adventures at Ghost Mountain Inn – The Garden of Eden Nestled in Northern KZN
Tucked beneath the mystical slopes of Ghost Mountain in northern KwaZulu-Natal, our mountain inn is more than a tranquil retreat—it’s a gateway to the rich stories and sacred landscapes of Zululand. In this personal reflection from a recent media visit, a guest captures the spirit of a stay at Ghost Mountain Inn: from the therapeutic rhythm of nature to the cultural echoes of the Gaza tribe and the wonder of wildlife encounters. What follows is their unfiltered journey—equal parts bush adventure and soulful discovery.
As if taking the cue from South Africans on social media, the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTAFA) summoned a few media colleagues to a bush getaway in northern KwaZulu-Natal — and the lover of things in me heeded the call.
The idea of a three-hour drive from the airport initially sounded daunting, but seeing all the blue gum trees along the side of the road and inhaling air that was fresh and free of city pollutants made the experience worthwhile.
Our destination at Ghost Mountain Inn in Mkhuze on Friday afternoon looked like sundowners and snacking, surrounded by bodies of water on the jetty overlooking the mountains.

The safari manager, Jean Toucher, who made it clear that she was a storyteller and not a historian, got us acquainted with the Gaza tribe, whose chiefs and kings were buried in caves instead of underground graves.
It wasn’t hard to imagine why mercenaries would conclude that the mountains were crawling with soulless creatures of the night when Toucher explained that Gaza flames would illuminate the mountain at night. However, why they misconstrued the mountain top for the body of a woman is a mystery best left to guesswork.
The historically wealthy Ghost Mountain is well respected by locals and guests. This is a sacred space to the Gaza people, whose great kings and queens rest in these caves. We got to know this tribe from a safe distance, as cultural preservation is rooted in being respectful of the practices of the occupants of that land.
There were rumours about a hike that was planned for Saturday morning, but I’ve been known to reject phone calls from loved ones at 6am. No offence, but the idea of making small talk with people I’d known for all of three seconds while also dodging snakes in the bush at ungodly hours didn’t particularly fascinate me.
After defrosting, I indulged in a warm shower in my spacious bathroom and headed to the dining hall for the most important meal of the day.
If you’re a couple that’s currently going through the proverbial ups and downs, the rooms at Ghost Mountain are large enough to accommodate you, your partner, and both your raging emotions.
What would be the point of relaxation if the host didn’t throw in a spa treatment? While my massage therapist’s hands dealt with my tense muscles, the soothing sound of fountains in the background and the bewitching scent of massage oils teleported me to what I imagined the Garden of Eden to have felt like.
The chirping birds and green trees standing tall and proud all around the lodge, flowers emblazoned all over as if to flaunt their colours, left me wondering if I wasn’t in fact in Eden.
One thing is certain — the Chakra huns didn’t lie: being surrounded by nature is therapeutic. Note to self: spas are not Tinder. What in the name of Rihanna are these wild thoughts I always have about massage therapists after a session?
What would a bush getaway be without a game drive? As we made our way to see the Big Five (hopefully), I couldn’t ascertain whether one of KZN’s gems still having gravel roads was so that tourists could have an authentic rural experience or if it amplified the failures of our political leaders, but alas.
What an educational adventure this was as we learnt that the game reserve used to be hunting farms but has since been turned into private lodges. It has also been the home of cinematography training for wildlife filming since 2021. In fact, a cheetah film is currently being developed at Bayala — so if you see me on BBC or National Geographic, feel free to ask for autographs.
We discovered some fun facts: rhinos are dehorned to deter poachers; zebra and wildebeest befriend each other because there’s safety in numbers; impala and nyala form communities; and giraffes are great allies because one kick from these tall cuties can send a lion back to its maker.
The sunset was beautiful, and the sundowners in the wild would have gone down really well if they weren’t ruined by a headache. What a downer!
Before departing on Sunday, we stopped by the home of Justice Myeni, a community leader. Here, we learnt about the oral documentation of history and how names of ancestors were passed down orally as older generations were unable to read and write.
This was telling of the wisdom of African people, whose history was engraved in memory. Myeni explained that families knew who lay in which grave, regardless of names not being written on tombstones. Elders were school-of-life graduates — problem solvers and advisers, despite not being “educated” by Western standards.s
After all the exploration, I shared with my sister how tragic it was that some of the inhabitants of this area and its surroundings never get to experience the gems that are right at their doorstep due to the economic disparities in this country.
This makes these experiences that much more anchoring.
